Commissioner Maruping meets the African Ambassadors Group in Washington to discuss domestication and implementation of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development Agenda in the context of African Union Agenda 2063

Dr. Anthony Mothae Maruping, Commissioner for Economic Affairs OF THE African Union (AUC), on the 6th October 2015 met with the African Ambassadors Group in Washington to discuss critical issues related to the domestication and implementation of the newly adopted Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development Agenda in the context of the AU Agenda 2063. The meeting took place in the African Union Permanent Mission to Washington, USA.

The adoption of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development Agenda marks another significant milestone in the history of development. The international community across the world came together and resolved to act collectively to combat existing and emerging global development challenges and finish the unfinished business of MDGs.

The articulation of Agenda 2030 was led by countries with broad participation from external stakeholders such as civil society organizations, the private sector and business, academia and scientists. Africa contributed to this process by developing a Common African Position on the Post 2015 Development Agenda which represented a united African voice in the formulation of the SDGs. Africa is proud that its contribution through CAP influenced the work of the Open Working Group of the SDGs and the Intergovernmental Negotiation Process.

This new agenda is the roadmap towards the world we want in 2030. It is a balanced agenda in that it encapsulates the three dimensions of sustainable development social, economic and environmental considerations. It builds on the achievements and lessons learnt during the implementation of Millennium Development Goals and provide necessary conditions for completion of the unfinished business of MDGs.

The adoption of SDGs came at a right time when Africa has devised Agenda 2063, an effective vehicle through which it will implement the SDGs. Agenda 2063 is Africa’s transformative development framework to achieve accelerated, sustained and inclusive economic growth that leads to sound, resilient inclusive socioeconomic development in the next 50 years.

Work has already commenced by the African Union Commission to domesticate the first 10 year Implementation plan into national, regional and continental frameworks to ensure proper implementation at national, regional and continental levels. Furthermore, the African Union Commission is working in close collaboration with partners to develop indicators frameworks to track SDGs and the Agenda 2063 first 10 Year Implementation plan and establish monitoring and evaluation mechanisms and build institutional capacities to generate quality statistical data.

The existing data gaps may not only pose a challenge in terms of ensuring we leave no one behind. Therefore a data revolution is required in order to generate the right data, at the right time in the right format.

Commissioner Maruping was accompanied by Mr. Chris Kachiza, Acting Director of SPPMERM, Mr. Dossina Yeo, Acting Head of Statistics Division of Economic Affairs Department and Mr. Ramatlali Nkhahle Special Assistant to the Commissioner.
