Gambian court orders govt. takeover of Libyan businesses

Justice Awa Bah, sitting at Gambia’s High Court in Banjul, has ordered government’s takeover of businesses owned by Libya African Investment Company (The Gambia), the Pro-government Daily Observer confirmed Monday.

According to official sources, the judged ruled that all investments and assets owned by Libya should be possessed and controlled by the Gambian government until “a government recognized by the United Nations is in place in Libya”.

This came in the wake of “an expert motion” filed by the Attorney General of the Republic of The Gambia and dated 27 April.

PANA recalls that the Gambian authorities had earlier issued out a statement to announce the freezing of Libyan assets as well as expelling the country’s diplomats in Banjul.

The investments included the Jerma Beach Hotel, Laico Atlantic Hotel and Dream Park all in the Gambia.

Shortly after that a Libyan-born private investor called a press conference to counter the Gambian government’s action, saying the investments were not owned by the Libyan government but by private Libyan citizens
