Tunisia seeks to attract 6 million tourists in 2012

Tunisia is seeking to attract 6 million tourists in 2012, according to Tourism Minister Elyes Fakhfakh.
The ministry, Mr. Fakhfakh added, has set a road map for 2012-2013 to promote the tourist sector, targeting the implementation of reforms to improve the quality of tourist products and diversify offers.
As part of this plan, he also said, a special interest will be lent to the Libyan, Algerian, Russian, Chinese and American buoyant markets, in addition to encouraging domestic tourism and achieving 12 new tourist projects.
He pointed out that the difficulties experienced by the Tunisian tourism in 2011, as a result of the fall in the number of visitors and tourist revenues, forced 25 hotels, employing some 3,500 persons, out of activity.
The minister reminded that the number of tourists who visited Tunisia last year dropped by 31% and the earnings went down by 33% compared with 2010. Some 4.8 million tourists visited the country against 7 million in 2010, while the sector’s receipts fell by 2,480 million Tunisian dinars (MTD), against 3,200 MTD in 2010.
