A high-profile debate on “Pan-Africanism and African Rebirth” as well as several other events have been lined up for Saturday, 25 May, 2013, in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, to kick start celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), renamed the African Union (AU) in 1999.
PANA reports that young people from the six Ethiopian regions, accompanied by their national police band, will Saturday morning perform a big choreography in Ethiopia’s National Stadium.
There will also be musical and cultural performances as well as a friendly football match involving Sudan and Ethiopia.
Pictures of the African bloc’s founding fathers, ranging from Guinea’s Sekou Toure, Tanzanian Julius Nyere, Egyptian Gamal Abdel Nasser and Ethiopia’s Haile Selassie, among others, adorned the main venue of the AU’s new headquarters, inaugurated in January 2012.
The celebrations will culminate in the 21st summit of heads of State and government of member-states.
