Italian waste repatriation: Italy agrees to cover all return fees

Tunisia and Italy have just reached an agreement on the repatriation of Italian waste illegally imported to Tunisia since 2020 to their country of origin, announced on Monday “Réseau Tunisie Verte,” (Green Tunisia Network) which is campaigning for a fair arbitration and end to this year-old case.

“The Italian side has finally agreed to cover all fees related to the repatriation of the waste,” network member Afef Marrakchi told TAP, indicating that this issue was a bone of contention between the two sides.

However, Marrakchi did not want to give more details about the date of repatriation of this waste which “will be soon,” underlining that the Network prefers to wait for the Tunisian authorities’ official announcement.

TAP tried to contact the Ministry of Environment for more details on the agreement, but did not get a response.

Foreign Minister Othman Jerandi had stated on January 8 that the Italian waste illegally imported to Tunisia would be returned soon
