Minister of Finance Sihem Bougdiri Namsia met Monday in Kasbah with new International Monetary Fund (IMF) Resident Representative for Tunisia Marc Gerard, the ministry said in a statement.

Tunisia, which needs to raise significant financial resources, has been working for several months to launch new negotiations with the IMF, to conclude a new financial support agreement.

Prime Minister Najla Bouden had noted in December 2021 that her government team has begun to develop a draft agreement with the Fund on a new programme “to send positive signals to foreign investors and friendly countries and help Tunisia to improve its sovereign rating.

He added that the economic reform programme will be based on a participatory approach, and will include the restructuring of public institutions and vitalization of of investment through reducing administrative procedures.

Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department at the IMF, Jihad Azour, had noted in November 2021 that technical discussions between the Fund staff and the Tunisian authorities are underway to examine the possibility of launching a new financing programme for Tunisia.

“Discussions focus on defining the country’s priorities, challenges and reforms to overcome the current crisis in the country,” he said.
