Mali launches mechanism to monitor mining activities

Mali has launched a mechanism to monitor mining activities, including controls and access to information on mining revenues (PAGIRM), PANA reported from here Saturday.

Launched in Sikasso, 480 km south of the capital, Bamako, the mechanism is an initiative of the Foundation for Sahel Development (FDS), in collaboration with its technical and financial partner, Diakonia, Mali.

The mechanism, to be implemented from 2012 to 2014, is aimed at improving governance and the access to information on mining revenues in the districts of Fourou, Sanso, Kalama, in the region of Sikasso (south), and Sadiola and Sitakili, in the region of Kayes (west).

Mali, which has nine gold exploitation sites and produces 50 tonnes of gold annually, is said to be Africa’s third largest gold producer behind South Africa and Ghana.

According to the FDS, gold represents 70% of the export receipts in Mali and about 15% of the country’s GDP.
