The Bank of Mauritius has warned citizens to beware of unsolicited emails, using the names of international lottery organisations, that are being sent to the island’s population with the intention to defraud them.
It said the emails, which convey to the addressees that they have won or could win money or other prizes, were aimed at tempting them to create online accounts ostensibly to receive their prize money.
”Lottery scammers are illegally exploiting the names of legitimate lottery organisations and lottery winners to defraud people,” the Bank said, before cautioning the public to be wary of emails asking for money transfers in exchange for prizes or other rewards.
The Bank also warned citizens to be careful while transferring money using the Internet or other funds transfer platforms.
