Nigeria: Heads of aviation agencies fired

Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has fired the bosses of all but one of the country’s aviation agencies, in a clean sweep that started with the sack of Aviation Minister Stella Oduah over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.

The affected agencies are the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN); Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA); Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT).

A statement from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation said FAAN’s Managing Director George Uresi will be replaced by the agency’s Director of Projects Saleh Dumona; while the General Manager (Procurement) in NAMA, Ibrahim Abdulsalam, replaces Nnamdi Udoh as Managing Director.

Also, the Government Safety Inspector & International Civil Aviation Organisation Focal Point for Nigeria on Aircraft Safety Information Systems, Capt. Samuel Caulcrick, takes over from Capt.  Chinyere Kalu as the Rector of NCAT; while the Commissioner, Accident Investigation and Prevention Bureau, Capt. Muhktar Usman, replaces Capt. Fola Akinkuotu as Director General of the NCAA “subject to confirmation by the Senate”.

In the meantime, Benedict Adeyileka will act as the Director General of the NCAA pending Usman’s confirmation by the Senate.

However, Tony Anuforo retains his position as Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

The agencies’ bosses were sacked barely one month after Oduah was removed by the President.

The trouble with the aviation sector started last October, when the NCAA was reported to have bought two bulletproof BMW cars on the approval of the then Minister and at an allegedly inflated rate of 255 million Naira (US$1.59 million), a development that sparked a national outcry.

Two panels, one set up by the House of Representatives and the other by the President, indicted the Minister.
