Nigeria: National ID project will drive FDI – EU envoy

Nigeria’s ongoing National Identity Number (NIN) project has the potential to drive foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) into the country, according to the new Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Michel Arrion.

Ambassador Arrion was quoted in the local media on Friday as making the statement when he visited the National Identification Management Commission (NIMC) headquarters in the capital city of Abuja.

He said the NIMC’s mandate to create a unified identification system in Nigeria would also help to bring real and recognisable benefits to Nigeria and other countries across the globe.

Ambassador Arrion noted that identity plays a key role in the growth and development of any economy, and that the NIMC’s quest to create a paradigm shift from the Identity Card issuance to the National Identity Management System, NIMS, is a great potential for the country.

Responding, NIMC Director General Chris Onyemenam said since its new mandate of creating a NIMS in 2007, the Commission has made conscious efforts to establish relationships with International Institutions in order to tap into their vast experiences and resources.

He assured that the Commission would leverage on the experiences in Europe and America, as well as draw support from the International Institutions, to ensure the success of the NIMS project.
