Schoolchildren in Somaliland are among thousands of pupils from around the world who have been taking part in the World’s Largest Lesson learning about the new United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The World’s Largest Lesson is a collaborative education project, supported by UNICEF, in which children learn about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in New York on 25 September 2015, which aim at ending poverty, fighting inequality and injustice and fixing climate change. Organizers believe that making the SDGs widely known at every level will contribute to their achievement by 2030.
“The SDGs are ambitious — but with the support of all Somalis they can become a reality,” said Steven Lauwerier UNICEF Somalia Representative. “The Somali children and youth are the key — they are the future and with their engagement we can make major progress.”
The Somaliland Ministry of Education and Higher Studies arranged for children at six schools to take part in the World’s Largest Lesson. The pupils studied one of the specially prepared lessons – on peace – which was translated into Somali with UNICEF’s support. An animated film on the SDGs, also translated into Somali, was also shown to some of the children.
It is expected that over this week children in one hundred countries will take part in a lesson about the SDGs which replace the Millennium Development Goals.
