It is time for courageous and responsible choices for Libya. The negotiations on the political dialogue have made substantial progress and a text presenting an inclusive, representative and long-term oriented solution has been presented to all sides for their final agreement. Now it’s up to the parties to show they are ready to rebuild their country.
All of the participants in the talks have so far shown responsibility by reaching this step. As we all know, the last mile is usually the most difficult; it requires leadership, commitment and the common willingness to work together for the sake of all Libyans that deserve peace, stability and prosperity.
The text, prepared thanks to the unrelenting efforts of UN SRSG Bernardino Leon, has to be agreed as soon as possible, as well as the names for the senior political positions, so that a new Government of National Accord can be formed without further delay. This will allow all Libyans to be united in their efforts to tackle the serious political, economic, security and, increasingly, humanitarian crisis.
The European Union is at the side of the Libyans. We continue to actively support the negotiations and we stand ready to provide immediate support to the new government, notably with a substantial €100 million package to support Libya on its new course.
