Tunisia: 1st national strategy for development of statistics to be adopted soon

The first national strategy for the development of statistics should soon be submitted to the government for approval, Samir Abdelhafidh, Secretary of State to the Minister of Economy and Planning in charge of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, said on Monday at a workshop to launch the Tunisia Data Literacy Program in Tunis.

This strategy, developed by the National Statistical Council (CNS) and the National Institute of Statistics (INS) with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), will facilitate the integration of statistics into all national policies and planning processes, as well as better coordination within the CNS to produce quality data that meets users’ needs.

According to Abdelhafidh, a reform of the national statistical system is still “necessary” to enable the INS and other public statistical structures to keep pace with the latest advances in the field and to ensure “relevant” public statistical production that can meet the needs of all public and private users.

He added that in parallel with this strategy, a cooperation program between the INS and the World Bank (WB) was launched in 2023 to support the Institute in achieving its goal of an integrated and efficient user-oriented statistical system.

The aim is to advance institutional reform at the INS, strengthen its integration with the data ecosystem and develop its capacity to use innovative data sources.
