Tunisia 91st best ecosystem for startups and city of Tunis 20th

Tunisia is ranked 91st in the Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2023, well behind such African countries such as Kenya (62nd), Nigeria (64th), Egypt (67th), Ghana (77th) and Senegal (82nd), but ahead of Morocco, which is ranked 93rd in the world (100 countries listed).

Regionally, Tunis ranks 20th behind Cairo and Riyadh, Johannesburg, Abu Dhabi, Amman, Accra, Bahrain and Dakar.

According to this index of the viability of the startup ecosystem, Tunisia has regained its position as the 2nd country in North Africa, despite falling 8 places in the index.

This rise in the North African ranking is mainly due to Morocco’s decline, which favored Tunisia’s rise in the ranking.

However, Tunisia has fallen in the index every year since it was introduced in 2017.

Tunis, the only city in Tunisia to be ranked, saw a notable improvement of 57 places to 360th in the world. Tunis moved up one place in North Africa to regain second place, ahead of Casablanca, which took this position from Tunis in 2022.

According to the Index, the inverse dynamics of Tunis and Tunisia can be explained by the fact that the country ranking takes population size into account, whereas the city ranking does not. The country ranking is also influenced by the fact that, apart from Tunis, there are no other implemented ecosystems ranked in the country.
