Tunisia: AMEA to begin construction of 100-MW solar project in Kairouan in H1 2023

Dubai-based AMEA Power LLC will begin the construction of a 100-MW solar project in Tunisia in the first half of 2023 amid plans for more renewable energy investments in the North African country, the company’s chairman Hussain Al Nowais told TAP news agency.

The solar park will be located in Metbassta, Kairouan Governorate and will be capable of generating nearly 230 GWh per year, enough to power around 42,878 local households. It is expected to reach commercial operation in the first half of 2024, according to the company’s website.

AMEA Power in consortium with TBEA Xinjiang New Energy Co., Ltd won the project in 2019 in an international tender launched by the Ministry of Industry and SMEs in Tunisia that awarded a total of 500 MW of solar capacity.

The construction of the solar plant in Metbassta will cost between USD 120 million and USD 140 million (EUR 132.96m).

Most recently, AMEA Power reached the financial close for a gigawatt of wind and solar projects in Egypt representing an investment of USD 1.1 billion and inked a framework agreement with the local government to develop a 1-GW green hydrogen project in Suez Governorate for the production and export of green ammonia.
