Tunisia and United Kingdom sign MoU on renewable energy

Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy Neila Nouira Gonji and Lord Tariq Ahmad, British Minister of State for South Asia, North Africa, Commonwealth Affairs and the United Nations signed on Tuesday in Tunis a memorandum of understanding, under which Britain will provide Tunisia with technical and financial support for the development of renewable energy.

During the signing ceremony, Gonji stressed the importance of this agreement that will “benefit from the British expertise in this field.”

Tunisia has established an ambitious program to produce up to 35% of its needs from renewable energy from 2022 to 2025, she recalled.

The United Kingdom is already the largest foreign investor in the energy sector in Tunisia, thanks to a previous memorandum of understanding signed over 20 years ago, said Lord Ahmad.

“With our Tunisian partners, British companies have invested not only in energy production, but also in the Tunisian people,” said the official.

He added that this “MoU our shared commitment to build a partnership that protects the environment and creates jobs in Tunisia.”

The British Minister of State recalled that the United Kingdom provides Tunisia with technical assistance for the development of renewable energy and for its inclusion in multilateral initiatives, such as the climate action fund.
