The value of currency in circulation (CIC) in Tunisia reached a new historic record at the end of last week.
For the first time, the CIC amount approached the 23-billion-dinar mark on Friday, February 7, 2025, according to daily data from the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).
This represents an increase of 1.66 billion dinars compared to the amount recorded on the same date last year.
Several factors have contributed to the rise in currency circulation in recent months, primarily the enactment of the new cheque law in August 2024 and the removal in October 2024 of the legal limit on cash holdings and the requirement to justify the origin of funds.
This removal marked a significant shift in regulations regarding cash transactions, eliminating previous restrictions on cash amounts without justification.
Among the factors driving the increase in CIC value are the significant portion of the economy operating outside the official banking system and the high level of economic uncertainty in the country.
It is worth noting that the volume of CIC has seen a significant rise since the second half of 2023, after surpassing the 20-billion-dinar mark for the first time in June of that year.
