Tunisia: current account deficit falls to 3.5% of GDP until end August (BCT)

The Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) said its Executive Board meeting highlighted at its meeting Wednesday the decrease in the current account deficit until the end of August 2021.

In fact, at the end of last August, the current account deficit slowed down to 3.5% of GDP, from 4.8% a year earlier.

This result is attributable mainly to the continued consolidation of income from expat remittances (+42.8%) with a relative improvement in tourism revenues (+5.2%), while the trade deficit (FOB-CIF) widened by 13.7% in relation to the evolution of imports, explains the BCT.

As for the net flows of external capital, they recorded a sharp drop due to the decline in the volume of external resources mobilized, on top of the increase in expenditure for the repayment of the debt principal.
