Tunisia: Domestic demand for oil products up 2% in first eight months of 2024

Domestic demand for petroleum products rose by 2% to 3039 ktoe in the first eight months of 2024, according to a report on the energy situation published by the National Observatory of Energy.

In fact, demand for petrol rose by 11%, while demand for diesel and jet fuel grew rose 4%. On the other hand, demand for fuel oil and petroleum coke fell by 8% and 15% respectively.

The structure of consumption of petroleum products did not change significantly between the end of August 2023 and the end of August 2024, with the exception of a few products, notably petroleum coke, whose share fell from 12% to 1%, and petrol, whose share rose from 18% to 20% over the same period.

Consumption of road fuels increased by 6%. It accounts for 65% of total oil product consumption.

LPG consumption increased by 2% between the end of August 2023 and the end of August 2024. Consumption of petroleum coke (used exclusively by cement works) fell by 15%.

On the other hand, jet fuel consumption at the end of August 2024 increased by 4% compared to the previous year.

Total natural gas demand fell by 2% to 3131 ktoe. Demand for electricity generation and final consumption went down by 2%.

The power generation sector remains by far the largest consumer of natural gas (72% of total demand at the end of August 2024). In fact, 95% of electricity generation is based on natural gas.

The decline in demand from the power sector is explained by the limited availability of natural gas.

Demand for natural gas in the non-energy end use sector fell by 2% to 888 ktoe. Demand from medium and low pressure customers was virtually unchanged, while demand from high pressure customers declined by 7%.
