Tunisia: Electricity production up 7% by end March 2026

National electricity production rose by 7% by the end of March 2026, reaching 4,493 GWh (including renewable self-production), compared to 4,212 GWh at the end of March 2025, according to the energy sector report published Monday by the National Observatory of Energy and Mines.

Electricity production intended for the local market increased by 2%, while electricity imports, mainly from Algeria, covered 9% of local market needs by the end of March 2026.

STEG continues to dominate electricity generation, accounting for 92% of national production by the end of March 2026. Electricity generated from renewable energy sources represented 7.3% of total production, according to the same report.

In addition, around 455 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaic rooftop systems had been installed by the end of March 2026 in the residential sector, along with 123 MW connected to medium- and high-voltage networks in the industrial, tertiary, and agricultural sectors.

As for electricity sales, they recorded a slight increase of 1% between the end of March 2025 and the end of March 2026. Sales to high-voltage customers declined by 7%, while sales to medium-voltage customers fell slightly by 1%.

It should be noted that low-voltage sales, mainly intended for the residential sector (representing nearly 75% on average), are based on bimonthly billing statistics, nearly half of which are estimated, making it difficult to obtain an exact picture of actual consumption.

The observatory noted that industrial companies remain the largest consumers of electricity, accounting for 61% of total demand from high- and medium-voltage customers by the end of March 2026.

Several sectors recorded a decline in electricity sales, particularly the chemical and petroleum industries (-7%), the basic metallurgical industry (-1%), extractive industries (-3%) and construction materials industries (-6%).
