Tunis ranks 106th globally in Mobile Internet speed

Tunisia continues to lag behind regional leaders in mobile internet performance, according to the latest edition of the Speedtest Global Index published by Ookla, which ranks internet connectivity across 152 cities worldwide.

The report, updated at the end of April 2026 and based on millions of user tests conducted through the Speedtest platform, evaluates mobile and fixed internet performance using three key indicators: download speed, upload speed, and latency, the latter measuring network response time.

Among Tunisian cities included in the ranking, Tunis placed 106th globally for mobile internet speeds, slipping two positions compared to the previous update.

The capital recorded an average mobile download speed of 72.63 Mbps, a level considered acceptable for everyday digital use but still far behind the world’s most connected metropolitan areas.

Meanwhile, Sfax showed slight improvement, climbing four spots to rank 111th worldwide with an average mobile download speed of 65.69 Mbps.

At the national level, Tunisia ranked 80th globally for mobile internet performance, with an average speed of 51.84 Mbps.

The country’s fixed broadband infrastructure, however, remains significantly weaker, ranking 172nd out of 202 economies covered by the index. Tunisia recorded an average latency of 25.62 milliseconds, reflecting slower network responsiveness compared to global standards.

The report highlights a widening gap between Tunisia and several neighboring countries in North Africa, particularly Algeria, which now boasts Africa’s fastest mobile internet speeds.

The Algerian capital, Algiers, climbed 11 places to rank 48th globally, entering the world’s top 50 cities with an average mobile speed of 163.31 Mbps.

According to the index, Algeria’s progress has been driven by major telecom infrastructure upgrades and the accelerated deployment of 4G and 5G networks in urban areas.

Rabat followed in 61st place worldwide with average speeds of 142.80 Mbps, while Casablanca ranked 68th at 140.11 Mbps. Oran also advanced significantly, reaching 93rd place globally with 138.29 Mbps.

Elsewhere in Africa, Lagos ranked 93rd with 93.42 Mbps, while Cape Town came in 95th globally with 92.32 Mbps.

Globally, the fastest mobile internet connection was recorded in Al-Rayyan, which topped the ranking with an exceptional average speed of 659.91 Mbps. The Qatari city overtook Abu Dhabi, which dropped to second place with 652.67 Mbps.

The top five was completed by Dubai (560.70 Mbps), Doha (552.59 Mbps), and Kuwait City (369.56 Mbps).

Other cities featured among the world’s top 10 fastest mobile networks include Rio de Janeiro, Stockholm, São Paulo, Seoul, and Skopje.
