Tunisia; energy independence rate rises 53% at end of September

The rate of energy independence of Tunisia stood at 53% at the end of September 2021, while it was about 42% at the same time last year. The monthly report of the energy situation of the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy shows the country’s energy needs in gas and oil that constitute 77% of the total primary energy sources.

The rate reflects the ratio of primary energy production, such as coal or oil, to primary energy consumption for a given period. When it is greater than 100, it shows that the country is in an export situation, while when it is less than 100, it expresses a reliance on imports.

Primary energy resources increased by 33% at the end of September 2021, year-on-year, to 3.8 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe). Domestic oil and gas production, regardless of the fee for the passage of Algerian gas through Tunisian territory, jumped by 135% in the first nine months of 2021 year-on-year.

Domestic oil and gas production is expected to increase by more than 10% in the first nine months of 2021.

As for Tunisia’s demand for primary energy, it went up 7% at the end of September 2021, compared to the same period a year earlier. The Tunisian demand for oil products jumped by 9% over a year.

The demand for oil products in Tunisia has increased by 9% over a year.

As for domestic exports of energy products, they grew 117%, on an annual basis. At the same time, imports increased by 27%.

Thus, the energy trade balance of Tunisia shows a widening of 1% of the energy deficit. This is the first deterioration since the beginning of the year. The energy deficit reached 3.8 billion dinars at the end of September 2021, compared to 3.77 billion dinars during the same period in 2020.
