Tunisia: expat remittances hit 1.4 billion dinars in Q1

After reaching a record of 5.8 billion dinars in 2020, remittances from Tunisian expats have continued to grow from the beginning of this year.

According to the daily monetary and financial indicators of the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT), these remittances reached more than 1.4 billion dinars, at the end of the first quarter of 2020, against 1.3 billion dinars during the same period last year, up 10%.

Expat remittances had reached a record of 5.8 billion dinars in 2020, accounting for 5.3% of Tunisia’s GDP.

Valued in foreign currency on the basis of monthly exchange rates of the BCT, remittances from the Tunisian diaspora stood at €1.74 billion or $ 2.1 billion, compared to €1.64 billion euros or $ 1.82 billion in 2019.

The Tunisian diaspora has brought in throughout the 2010 decade as much foreign currency as tourism (3.8% of GDP on average between 2010 and 2020).
