Tunisair debt reaches alarming levels, says transport minister

Minister of Transport, Rachid Amri, announced on Monday, January 13 that Tunisair’s revival is being given special attention by the highest state authorities.

The aim is to restore its prestige and efficiency after years of difficulties that have affected its operations at all levels.

Amri admitted that the company’s financial situation was worrying, with debts reaching alarming levels, as is the case with many public transport companies.

However, he stressed that constant efforts are being made to save the national airline, put an end to its losses and begin a recovery, the first signs of which are beginning to be felt.

In the short term, the aim is to enable the company to cover its running costs and pay salaries from its own resources.

In the longer term, the aim is to transform the company’s performance so that it becomes profitable again.

The Minister also stressed the importance of responsible and effective management. According to him, Tunisair will be able to overcome this crisis and regain its competitiveness if each manager fulfils his or her duties to the full and if efficient working systems are re-established, together with the motivation of employees to perform their duties to the best of their ability.

A contingency plan relaunched!

Amri has ordered that an action plan be drawn up as soon as possible, including an emergency rescue plan and a medium-term restructuring plan for the national airline Tunisair.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Transport, this action plan also provides for a new management structure adapted to the company’s needs, the acceleration of the amendment of current legislation to improve Tunisair’s competitiveness and the rationalization of human resources to guarantee the necessary efficiency.

It is also a question of improving the quality of services and making flight regularity the main objective, and of updating crisis management measures, particularly in terms of anticipation, monitoring, intelligence and “precise and transparent” information.

The Minister of Transport has also given instructions to develop the company’s ‘corporate communication’ in the light of the delicate circumstances in which it finds itself. He has also ordered that an updated information system be put in place to enable the company to avoid confusion and uncertainty among passengers and other stakeholders.

The Ministry of Transport has stated that it is “closely and continuously monitoring the company’s situation in coordination with Tunisiair’s management and that other measures will follow the decisions currently being taken”.
