Tunisia: industrial production down 2.8% at end of March 2019

Industrial production fell by 2.1% in March 2019, mainly as a result of the decline in the extraction of energy products (-6.5%) and the non-energy extraction sector (-7.3%) and the agri-food industry sector (-7.9%), following the decline in olive oil production, the National Institute of Statistics said on Wednesday.

Similarly, production fell in the mechanical and electrical industry (-3.2%), the clothing and leather sector (-2.7%), the petroleum refining sector (-56.1%) and the rubber and plastics sector (-8.1%).

On the other hand, industrial production recorded an increase in the chemical industry (+ 33.9%) and the manufacturing sector for other non-metallic mineral products (+ 6.6%).

For the entire 1st quarter, the decline is more serious

In the first quarter of 2019, industrial production decreased by 2.8% compared to the same period of 2018.

This decrease is explained by the decline in production in the energy products extraction sector (-10.8%) and the food industry sector (-14.6%), following the decline recorded in the production of olive oil.

Similarly, production fell in the mechanical and electrical industries (-1.9%), the clothing and leather sector (-2.1%) and the petroleum refining sector (-16.9%).

In addition, industrial production recorded an increase in the non-energy product extraction sector (+ 35.3%) due to the increase in crude phosphate production (933.7 thousand tons in

the first quarter of 2019 compared with 468.6 thousand tons in the same period of 2018), the chemical industry sector (+ 23.8%) and the sector of manufacture of non-metal mineral products (+ 4.0%).
