Tunisia: leather and footwear exports post 10% increase

Exports of leather and footwear sector grew by 10.2% during the first two months of 2013 from 172.7 million Tunisian dinars (MTD) in 2012 to 190.4 MD MTD in 2013, said the National Center for Leather and Footwear (CNCC).

This increase is attributed to the rise in complete footwear exports, estimated at 109.3 MTD, i.e. 57.4% of the overall sector’s achievements.

Offshore companies account for nearly 97% of total exports, while those on shore contribute only 3.3%. In terms of imports, the latter realized 13.4% while offshore companies accounted for 86.6% of the exports.

Total Tunisian imports totaled 95 MTD during the first two months of the current year, against 89.3 MTD for the same period of 2012.

China is the leading provider of Tunisia with 44.2% of total imports of complete footwear.

As for the country’s customers in this sector, they are especially Italy, France and Germany.
