Tunisia: number of tourists exceeds 5 million to end of October

The number of tourists, who visited Tunisia until the end of October 2012, reached more than 5 million tourists, announced Elyes Fakhfakh, Minister of Tourism.

Speaking at the opening of a national seminar on “Energy Conservation in the Tourism Sector,” the Minister said that this number is up 27.7% compared to 2011 and down 15% compared with 2010.

Tourism revenues also increased by 34% compared to 2011, reaching nearly 2.6 billion dinars. However, these revenues were down 10% compared to 2010.

These indicators show that the tourism sector is poised to achieve the goals set by the start of the year, aimed in particular to achieve the 2010 results no later than 2013.

The Minister pointed out in this context that his department has already set up a unit of management by objectives which will be responsible for ensuring the implementation of programs and action plans recommended by the strategic study for the promotion of the tourism sector in 2016. The official commissioning of this unit will be announced in the coming days, he added.

The main objectives of the study are to increase by 1 million per year the number of tourists to reach 8.6 million tourists in 2013 and 10 million in 2016, double the average expenditure per tourist in 2020, promote tourism investments and increase investment in alternative tourism by 10% per year.
