Tunisia: number of tourists hits 5.8 million until August 20 (Ministry)

5.8 million tourists visited Tunisia, until August 20, 2019, posting an increase of 13.9%, compared to the same period in 2018, according to data published on by the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts on Thursday.

The number of overnight stays reached 15.5 million on the same date, up 13.3%.

Regarding the number of tourists, the department revealed that almost half of the arrivals were recorded by Maghrebi nationals (2.8 million), including Algerians (1.6 million) and Libyans (1.1 million). ).

As for the number of European tourists, it amounted to 1.8 million people, up 18.3%, compared to the same period in 2018.

As far as overnight stays are concerned, the Ministry has drawn up a list of the most attractive regions for tourists. The Yasmine-Hammamet zone leads with an increase of 20.5%, followed by Monastir-Skanes (+ 19.6%) and Sousse (+ 16.2%).

In addition, the Tourism Department recalled that tourism receipts reached about 3.5 billion dinars as of August 20, i.e. a 46% growth.

In foreign currencies, the rise is less significant, because of the depreciation of the dinar. The rate stood at 31.7% in euros and 23.5% in dollars.

Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, René Trabelsi had indicated on Tuesday in Bizerte that Tunisia will manage to achieve the goal of attracting 9 million tourists by the end of the year.

“We plan, in the years to come, to increase the number of visitors, but above all to improve the quality of services and hospitality and boost alternative tourism,” he said.
