Tunisia: record harvest of pomegranates in Gabes and export of 1,045 tons

Exports of pomegranates of Gabes reached 1,045 tons, until the first week of November 2012, against 928 tons during the same period of the previous season, according to data provided by the Agricultural Development Commission of Gabes.

This figure does not truly reflect the amount of grenades marketed outside the Tunisian border, due to the lack of accurate data on exports of this product to Libya where citizens buy grenades of Gabes in large quantities.

This fruit, whose season was marked by a record harvest, estimated at over 28,000 tons, has reached many European markets and Gulf countries, plus two new ones which are Sweden and Bangladesh.

In the same context, the Association for the Protection of the Oasis of Chénini continued, for the fourth consecutive season, the experience of the production of organic pomegranates, on a surface of 66 ha, with the participation of 100 farmers. It has so far exported 7.5 tons of this product to Germany.
