Tunisia: Sharp rise in bills of exchange by end of September

Bank teleclearing in Tunisia continues its remarkable expansion, both in volume and value, as the system enters a phase of deep transformation of its technical architecture.

According to data published by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) in its latest payments bulletin, the volumes and amounts exchanged through the various clearing instruments recorded strong growth.

With 28.1 million transactions totaling 58 billion dinars, bank transfers remained the most used payment method and the highest in value during the first nine months of the year.

Its growth of 10.2% in volume and 42% in value reflects the growing confidence of individuals and businesses in this channel, supported by digital and mobile platforms introduced by banks.

As for direct debit, it also continued its rapid growth. The number of transactions reached 5.9 million (+22.3%), for a total amount of 23 billion dinars (+25.4%).

Regarding traditional instruments, the use of cheques recorded a sharp decline in the first nine months of the year, to the benefit of bills of exchange.

Cheques represented 5.9 million transactions (-6.8%), for a total of 40.2 billion dinars (-5.8%), while bills of exchange reached 3.4 million transactions (+16%), totaling 39.8 billion dinars (+58.6%).

Regarding traditional instruments, the use of checks has seen a significant decline to the benefit of promissory notes during the first nine months of the current year.

Checks totaled 5.9 million transactions (-68%) for an amount of 40.2 billion dinars (-58%), while promissory notes reached 3.4 million transactions (+160%) for 39.8 billion dinars (+58.6%).

The BCT (Central Bank of Tunisia) nevertheless points out that rejection rates remain high, reaching up to 47.5% in number for direct debits, 10.2% for promissory notes, and 2.2% for checks.

In terms of value, rejection rates reached up to 8.8% for promissory notes, 4% for checks, and 6.6% for direct debits.
