Tunisia to sign $ 1.7-billion loan agreement with IMF this month

Tunisia is expecting to sign a loan agreement of $ 1.7 billion with the International Monetary Fund in May, Finance Minister Elyes Fakhfakh, told “Al Arabiya” TV channel.

The loan is intended to immunize the Tunisian economy vis-à-vis global economic challenges, including the debt crisis in Europe.

An IMF mission is expected this month in Tunisia, before another meeting in the United States, he added, specifying that Tunisia hopes to sign an agreement by the end of April or early May.

The minister stressed that the amount of the proposed loan was $ 1.7 billion, although it was a question of a figure close to $ 1.8 billion.

He also said that Tunisia will issue an Islamic bond issue of $ 700 million (Sukuk) before the end of the year, in late June or early July, when the law on Sukuk will be enacted.
