Tunisia: trade deficit exceeds 10% of GDP (FinMin)

“Tunisia’s trade deficit has exceeded 10% of GDP in the first 11 months of 2017, reaching alarming levels,” Finance Minister Ridha Chalghoum said on Wednesday.

Responding to MPs at a plenary of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) dedicated to the review of the 2018 finance bill, he added that “worsening of the trade deficit has generated additional pressure on foreign exchange reserves, negatively impacting the dinar exchange rate”.

The minister said “the rate of coverage of exports by imports, which stands at 68.3%, has forced the government to take measures to streamline imports in the finance bill 2018, pending a return to a more sustained economic growth.
