Tunisia: travel expenditures by Tunisians reach 1.25 billion dinars in 2021

Travel expenditures by Tunisians posted an increase of 19.9% in 2021, compared to 2020, to 1,246 million dinars, according to the 2021 report on the balance of payments and international investment position of Tunisia, published by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).

However, these expenditures showed a strong decline compared to its level in 2019, during which Tunisians spent 2,341 million dinars on travel, a drop of 47%.

The growth recorded in 2021 compared to 2020 is linked, essentially, to the increase in tourist expenditure (+36.2%) amounting to 701 million dinars and those for studies and training courses (+10.4%) amounting to 401 million dinars.

On the other hand, spending on the “Hajj and Umrah” remained low (10 million dinars in 2021 and 48 million dinars in 2020) due to the restrictions on travel to the holy places imposed by the Saudi authorities because of the pandemic situation.
