Tunisia: Tunisair reports ‘’satisfactory results despite crisis’’

With 3,709,814 passengers from January 1 to December 31, 2013, Tunisair announced in a statement, a 2.9 % decrease in total passenger traffic compared to 2012 (3,819,653 passengers), an increase of 16.6 % compared to 2011 (3,180,750 passengers) and a 0.3% rise compared to 2010 (3,698,365 passengers).

This decrease in 2013 compared to 2012 is due to the large drop in charter activity (less than 177,911 passengers /-30.8 %) directly related to the transportation of tourists whose numbers have dropped, despite the good performance recorded on regular flights (plus 72,821 passengers /+2.3 %).

Indeed, regular activity performed well during all months of 2013 except for the month of April (-6.3 %) and July (-19.5 %).

July which represents with August the super-peak period has experienced a sharp decline as it coincided with Ramadan and due to the significant decline in European tourists including French.

The overall load factor stood at 72% down 2 pts compared to the same period in 2012.

The main markets that showed improvement in 2013 are:

– Libya with a rise of 54.7 % generated by frequency multiplication combined with the increase in tourist arrivals up 17.7 %

– Algeria with + 15.5 % compared to 2012.

– Russia 26 % up compared to 2012.

On the main market of Tunisair, France, and despite a 22.4 % drop in tourist arrivals, Tunisair performed well with 1,299,914 passengers in 2013 (or -9.3 % compared to 2012), but at the expense of the average revenue per passenger which declined slightly.
