Tunisia: unemployment stabilizes at 16.1% in first quarter

The unemployment rate has almost stabilized at 16.1% in the first quarter of the current year, compared to 16.2% in the fourth quarter of 2021, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) Monday.

The estimated number of unemployed reached 653,200 of the total labor force, compared to 673,500 unemployed at the end of last December.

By gender, the unemployment rate posted a 0.2 points increase for men and 0.4 points decrease for women to 14.1% and 20.9%, respectively.

The unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 24 went down to 38.5% in the first quarter of 2022, (from 40% in the fourth quarter of 2021). This rate reached 39.8% for men and 36.0% for women.

During the first quarter of 2022, the labor force in Tunisia is estimated at 4.046 million, compared to 4.160 million people in the fourth quarter of 2021, a decrease of 113,900.

As a result, the labor force participation rate fell to 45.6% in the first quarter of 2022, 1.4 percentage points lower than in the fourth quarter of 2021.

The working population is divided into 2.814 million men and 1.232 million women. The labor force participation rate is estimated at 64.8% for men and 27.2% for women.
