Tunisian startup “NextProtein” announces its expansion into Mexico

 Tunisian startup “NextProtein”, founded by two Tunisian citizens, Syrine Chaalala and Mohamed Gastli, announced that it will expand its activities to Mexico (Latin America), said the Agency for the Promotion of Foreign Investment (FIPA).

This investment, worth 655 million pesos (around 120 million dinars), will help set up five factories in Mexico, create 400 jobs and the recycle nearly 200 tonnes of organic waste per year.

Through this partnership, the company will have access to expired vegetable and fruit waste from “Central de Abasto”, the main wholesale market in the Mexican capital. This waste will then be used for the reproduction o flies, which are transformed into several products used in the manufacture of protein-rich food for animals.

NextProtein was founded in 2015. Currently, it is headquartered in France and has two factories in Tunisia. The company underlined that it could create, as much protein as a 100-hectare field of soya on an area of 100m².

The company is seeking to increase its expansion in Latin America in the coming years, dedicating investments of 430 million dinars there in the medium term.
