UGTT utterly opposed to five-year freeze on civil service wages

The labour union is strongly opposed to the government’s proposals, mainly a five-year freeze on civil service wages and the gradual lifting of subsidy until 2026, said Assistant Secretary General in charge of State Enterprises Slaheddine Selmi.

The Tunisian General Labour Union (French: UGTT) is intent on having the minutes of the previous agreement with the government on wage hikes in November 2021 implemented, the trade unionist said Sunday on the sidelines of an administrative committee meeting of the regional union of labour in Sousse.

The UGTT rejects circular No. 20 which provides for a ban on negotiations with trade unions without a prior Prime Ministry authorisation, Selmi said. This is a breach of the Constitution and the international law and it undermines social dialogue.

Members of the administrative committee denounced, for their part, “methodical attacks” against the labour union and workers.

I Watch unveiled a reform programme developed by the Tunisian government in the runup to talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The package of measures to overcome the ongoing crisis mainly includes a freeze on civil service wages and hiring (2022/2024).
