UN Committee on Migrant Workers to review Cabo Verde, Guinea, Seychelles, Timor-Leste

GENEVA, Switzerland, August 24, 2015/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers and their Families (CMW) is meeting from 31 August to 7 September to review:

Cabo Verde (31 Aug- 1 Sep); Guinea (1- 2 Sep); Seychelles (2-3 Sep);

Timor-Leste (3-4 Sep)

The above are among the 48 States Parties to the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families. They are required to submit regular reports to the Committee, which is composed of 14 international independent human rights experts.

The Committee will discuss a range of issues relating to the implementation of the Convention with the respective government delegations. The sessions, held in Palais Wilson, Geneva, begin at 15:00 to 18:00 Geneva time and resume the following day from 10:00 to 13:00.

Members will also hear from NGO representatives, national human rights institutions and UN agencies. To mark the 25th anniversary of the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the Convention, the Committee will hold a half-day discussion on 8 September to examine the multiple human rights abuses faced by migrant works. The discussion, which will bring together representatives of States, United Nations bodies and specialised agencies, civil society and other relevant organisations as well as individual experts, will also cover the challenges for States on how to address these issues, focussing in particular on migrant workers in the Gulf, undocumented children in the Americas, and the flow of migrants across the Mediterranean.

The High Commissioner will be participating in this event together with representatives of the Holy See, the European Union, the Philippines, Mexico, the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Amnesty International, Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM), Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA) and Centro de Derechos Humanos Fray Matías de Córdova (Mexico).

The aim of the discussion is to underscore the importance of the Convention as an agreed international human rights framework, including the need to increase the number of ratifications.
