2 killed in military helicopter crash in Congo

A military helicopter crashed Monday night in Mbouambé, over 200 km north of the Congolese capital, Brazzaville, killing the two Ukrainian crew members, the police said.

”The helicopter crashed and caught fire,” said Patou Mascott, the Police Commissioner in Léfini.
”Two persons died in the crash (the pilot and co-pilot)…Their bodies were recovered and flown to Brazzaville.”

The chopper took off from Gamboma (central Congo), where there were clashes Monday between security forces and supporters of an opposition member who claimed victory for their candidate in the country’s parliamentary elections on Sunday.

The last crash of a military helicopter in Congo was in November 2011 in the Sangha, northeast of the country.

The Ukrainian pilot died while three crew members were injured in the crash.
