‘8m passengers flew locally in Nigeria in 2008’

Domestic airlines in Nigeria flew 8 million passengers i n 2008, but the figure is considered very low compared to the country’s population of 140 million, the private Guardi an reported Friday, quoting the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

The paper said dwindling purchasing power and phobia for flying had pushed down air passenger traffic in the country in recent years, even with new airlines springing up.

A one-hour, round trip flight costs about US$250, a huge amount in a country wit h a minimum wage of 7,500 Naira (US$50).
