Amid the escalating crisis facing the national airline Tunisair, the Ministry of Transport announced a series of firm decisions on Friday aimed at stabilizing the situation and addressing the anger of passengers affected by recent disruptions.
A national symbol, Tunisair has recently suffered significant reputational damage due to repeated delays, flight cancellations, and poor communication, leading to widespread public dissatisfaction.
In a statement, the ministry announced the dismissal of Mr. Habib Mekki from his position as Chairman of the airline’s Board of Directors.
He is being replaced as the Ministry’s representative on the Board by Mr. Tarek Bouazizi, a senior public service advisor.
The ministry also requested that the Board of Tunisair elect a new Chairperson as soon as possible.
On the technical side, Mr. Issam Hmam, an aeronautical engineer, has been appointed to lead Tunisair Technics, while retaining his current responsibilities.
Furthermore, station managers and airline representatives abroad have received formal warnings.
They are now required to improve passenger care, especially at airports experiencing disruptions, and to provide clear, reliable, and real-time information.
Finally, the Ministry emphasized that it is closely monitoring cases of administrative and financial corruption that have contributed to the airline’s deterioration.
Sanctions are expected for those involved, and replacements will be made where necessary to ensure a level of public service that meets citizens’ expectations.
