Agriculture calls in Dakar for funding of water and agricultural projects in Africa

Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries, Ezeddine Ben Cheikh, called on Monday in Dakar (Senegal) for the mobilization of necessary funds to support water- and agriculture-related projects in Africa.

In his speech delivered during the 14th General Assembly of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), in the presence of ministers and senior officials from various African countries, he reaffirmed Tunisia’s commitment to supporting the new African vision in the water sector and contributing to its success.

He strongly recommended the exchange of expertise in water resource mobilization, desalination, and the reuse of treated wastewater.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ben Cheikh emphasized the importance of Maghreb and African cooperation in managing groundwater, which is considered a strategic resource for the future of food security.

The minister also highlighted Tunisia’s willingness to actively contribute to the development and implementation of the 2026–2033 action plan, in order to strengthen complementarity between national policies and continental priorities.

This meeting is particularly important as it marks the adoption of the African Water Policy 2063, aimed at ensuring water security, enhancing resilience to climate change, and promoting sustainable development across the continent.

On the sidelines of the event, the Tunisian minister held bilateral meetings with several African counterparts, focusing on exploring joint cooperation opportunities and exchanging successful experiences in water and agricultural security.

Tunisia’s presence at this major African event reflects its pioneering role in water diplomacy and its commitment to collective African action to achieve the objectives of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, the ministry further stated.
