Banks to reopen in northern Mali

Banks that shut down in northern Mali after they were ransacked by Islamists who seized control of large swathes of the West African country last year are to reopen soon, according to a communique from the council of ministers.

It said managers of Malian banks had approved the reopening of the Agency of central bank of West African states (BCEAO) in Mopti, 670km north of Bamako, and the branches of national banks in Gao, Timbuktu and Kidal.

The communique said a meeting was held on Wednesday on the reopening of banks in Gao, Timbuktu and Kidal.

The Islamists looted huge sums of money from the banks and other the financial institutions in the cities.

The communiqué said the government would tighten security and ensure the restoration of water, electricity and telephone connections.
