Botswana to remove barriers in micro-financing

Botswana’s Vice President Ponatshego Kedikilwe has said his government is committed to dealing with the pitfalls associated with micro-financing in the country.

“Government is committed to ensuring an organised micro lending industry in Botswana,” Dr. Kedikilwe said here Wednesday. “As government, we are equally concerned about ‘fly-by-night’ micro lenders whose activities have left many Batswana in a state of poverty and indebtedness.”

Meanwhile, the government has expressed the hope that the newly-established Botswana Micro Lenders Council will assist in making micro lenders adhere to lending regulations and ethical imperatives of the industry.
