Dubai’s Metro opens tomorrow, 09-09-2009, with 10 stations operational on the Red line.
The 19 stops that are not opening tomorrow should be operating by February next year.
When the 20km Green line opens in June 2010, the Dubai Metro will take the title of longest automated metro network from the Vancouver Skytrain, surpassing it by 3km.
Later, the Red Line will be extended to the Jebel Ali/Abu Dhabi border.
Next up, in 2012, the Purple Line will shuttle passengers between Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International Airport, Jebel Ali, which is scheduled to open June 201.
Primary reasons for building the Metro, according to the website of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), which heads the project, are to provide an alternative mode of transport to ease congestion, save passengers’ travelling time and reduce traffic pollution.
An essential component of the project is the viaduct system – elevated tracks on which passengers in driverless trains will pass smoothly above thoroughfares and businesses.
