E/African leaders to consider South Sudan’s request for EAC membership

Heads of State of the five-member countries of the East African Community (EAC) will hold their 10th Extraordinary Summit on 28 April, 2012, to consider, among other things, the application by South Sudan to join the regional bloc, the Community Secretariat announced Tuesday.

During the one-day session, to be held at Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge in Arusha, northern Tanzania, the EAC leaders will also consider a report of the Council of Ministers on the proposed attainment of a single customs territory and the appointment of a new Deputy Secretary General from Uganda.

The Secretariat confirmed that President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya, who is also Chairperson of the EAC Summit, President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete of Tanzania, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda were all expected at the Summit.

Meanwhile, the 24th Extraordinary meeting of the EAC Council of the Ministers is currently underway in Arusha to pave the way for the Summit.
