Energy: Government approves pilot project for energy transition of mosques in Tozeur

A pilot project of energy transition of 147 mosques in the governorate of Tozeur, whose estimated cost is 2.76 million dinars (MD) has been approved by the government.

According to the decision of the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Tunisia (JORT) No. 116 of December 16, 2021, this project provides for the connection of these institutions, currently connected to the power grid of low voltage, to renewable energy. The connection work will be finalized in two years.

This project financed by the Energy Transition Fund also provides, to replace the traditional sources of lighting by other economic connected to photovoltaic units of electricity production while putting in place a system of remote monitoring of energy production and consumption.

Director of Rationalization of Energy Consumption at the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME), Oussama Nagati, said last June, the agency will launch in collaboration with the Ministry of Religious Affairs, a programme of energy transition of Tunisian mosques.

Nagati stressed on the sidelines of the “Days of the ambassadors of the energy transition” organised by ANME in Hammamet from June 24 to 26, 2021, that the project aims, in particular, the installation of energy efficiency mechanisms and energy control in 6000 mosques nationwide whose annual bill of energy consumption is about 19 MD.

He said that the project will be funded to 12 MD by the Energy Transition Fund, based on three axes namely the change of electric lamps in mosques by economic lamps that will save 70% of energy consumption, the installation of photovoltaic panels and training of religious executives in monitoring the rationalisation of energy consumption.

The official said that the project will be initiated in the governorate of Tozeur, by ANME in coordination with the Ministry of Religious Affairs in accordance with the decision of the Minister of Energy, Mines and Energy Transition of September 1, 2020.
