EU grants Senegal FCFA 9.2b for poverty reduction

The European Union (EU) Tuesday granted Senegal around FCFA 9.2 billion (US$18.4 million) to help the West African country alleviate poverty.

The grant was made available under the budget support to the Poverty Reduction Strategy in Senegal, according to a statement issued Tuesday evening by the EU delegation in Dakar and sent to PANA.

The statement said the grant follows the EU’s pledge to support reforms being undertaken by Senegalese new authorities.

The statement also notes the “good progress made by Senegal in maintaining a policy of macroeconomic stability”.

It said another grant of FCFA 5.9 billion (US$11.8 million) for 2012 could be made available in the fall of that year.

The disbursement will be subject to the presentation of the draft reform of the Court of Auditors to the National Assembly and the progress made in the creation of the National Anti-Corruption body, among others.
