Faulty auxilliary power unit forces aircraft to make emergency landing in Nigeria

The Management of Nigeria’s second largest domestic airline, Aero Contractors, said Wednesday that a faulty Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) forced one of its aircraft to make an emergency landing at the main gateway Murtala Mohammed International Airport in the commercial city of Lagos on Monday night.

The plane, which took off from Lagos around 8 p.m. local time for a one-hour flight to the inland capital city of Abuja, returned to the airport 12 minutes later, after the pilot reportedly announced that one of the aircraft’s two engines had packed up.

The plane, loaded with passengers, landed without incident at the international wing of the airport.

On Wednesday, an official of the company handling the airline’s public relations issues said in a short message service to aviation correspondents that it was the failure of the APU, rather than engine failure, that forced the plane to return to Lagos.

”It was the internal air borne Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) of the aircraft that was faulty and it could not supply the initial light the aircraft needed inside the cabin and power the air conditioners prior to take off,” said Simon Tumba.

”The pilot had to return the aircraft to Lagos where the airline had its warehouse and spare parts to repair the faulty APU,” he said, adding that the APU had been fixed and that the particular aircraft is back in operation.
