Gambia makes deal with Africa Cable

Gambia has entered into a deal with the Africa Cable to Europe (ACE) for the provision of a submarine cable landing point for the tiny W e st African country, authoritative sources in Banjul confirmed to PANA Sunday.

According to the sources, telecom giant, Gambia Telecommunications Company(GAMTE L) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ACE consortium for t h e project which is expected to completed by 2011.

Gambia’s Information/Communication Ministry issued a communique shortly after th e deal, saying it was in line with “an effort to provide a more secure and robus t communications infrastructure in Gambia, with high capacity bandwidth.”

On completion, the project will provide Gambia direct access to worldwide submar ine cable networks and “significantly reduce the cost of bandwidth and improve t h e quality on international telephony and related services to all Gambians at aff o rdable prices.”

The deal is part of new recovery plans developed by the government for its troub led national telecommunication giant, GAMTEL.
